both a critter AND a spectacle!

There's a herring out there that...farts! Yes, friends, herring fart. Here's a wav file of the sound.

Researchers, including Maryland's own Art Popper, postulate that the sound helps schools of herring to communicate with one another, particularly in the dark. Here's the full article for your edification.

Also, my sister alia reports that Girl Scouts are now earning merit badges for trapping and skinning beavers. Just what DOES that merit badge look like, anyway?

They don't actually get merit badges:

"Officials at the Girl Scouts' New York headquarters did not return repeated calls. But in a Sept. 16 letter to PETA, spokeswoman Courtney Shore said the organization does not promote trapping or hunting and does not offer merit badges for those activities."

But I'd like to see the design if they did ;)

Would they get one for trapping, and one for skinning?

On another note: Are you going to post about the new Hall of Mammals? We should plan a field trip...
